Local’s Guide to Germantown

Founded in the 1850’s by European immigrants, Germantown is Nashville’s first official suburb. At just 18 square blocks, the small neighborhood packs a lot into the small space, including gorgeous homes, unique restaurants, and locally owned stores and businesses. The community provides one of the most beautiful areas for a stroll, and residents enjoy 19th-century architecture in the Victorian brick row homes, colorful cottages, and ornate churches along the way. The area is one of Nashville’s most walkable, with a network of easy to traverse sidewalks that pass by unique coffee shops, chocolatiers, and impressive restaurants.
Nearby, you can find some of Nashville’s other popular and historic locations. Bicentennial Mall is an impressive monument to Tennessee’s history and is a great place for both runners and kids looking to cool off in the fountains in the hot summer. To the west, you’ll find the farmer’s market which is home to locally grown produce, food artisans, and craft vendors. Visit during one of their special events or participate in one of their workshops or chef demonstrations for a truly unique experience.
To the east is First Tennessee Park, home to Nashville’s minor league baseball team, the Sounds. The award-winning park is a must visit for not just a baseball game, but also for concerts and festivals throughout the year.
Germantown also rightfully puts on one of the best annual festivals. Each year for four days, the streets are shut down for the second largest Oktoberfest in the country. Nearly 300,000 guests make their way to the tiny community to enjoy German food and beer as well as live music and other fun activities.
Germantown has seen a rebirth that has brought about a distinct modern atmosphere. It is inviting to Nashvillians seeking urban living with historic grandeur and makes a great place to live, work, and play.

At Monell’s, you’ll feast on plates of Southern classics and comfort foods, piled high on serving plates and shared family-style with your neighbors! Looking for a great place to go for a weekend brunch that stretches on through the afternoon? Butchertown Hall’s Tex-Mex menu includes great things to snack on and some more substantial options to satisfy your hunger. Drink-wise, they have a wide selection of German beers and mezcal cocktails that are great for sipping on as you completely bail on whatever else you planned for the afternoon.
THINGS TO DO
This open-air outdoor market is home to more than 150 farmers, artisans, and small businesses during peak growing season. Throughout the year, shoppers can find ranchers, dairy farmers, cheese-makers, bakers, food artisans, crafters, and flea merchants, as well as farm-direct products like honey, jams, jellies, and more!
This state-of-the-art facility is the official home of the Nashville Sounds Baseball Club, but also serves as an events center for soccer, concerts, festivals, and various smaller public and private events! Take a look at their calendar for upcoming events.
Bicentennial Capitol Mall gives visitors a taste of Tennessee’s history, natural wonders and serves as a lasting monument to Tennessee’s Bicentennial Celebration. With just a simple walk in the park, visitors can experience many facets of Tennessee’s history including a 200-foot granite map of the state, a World War II Memorial, a 95-Bell Carillon, a Pathway of History and the Rivers of Tennessee Fountains!
